What is the colour of 2026 so far ?
The colour I have sold the most of this year, is …my ‘Cool Blue’, and if I look at Instagram, I’m seeing it everywhere.
Blue is, of course, a timeless and super versatile shade. My new ‘Cool Blue’ Mongolian sheepskin colour took months to perfect. It’s a muted blue that's powdery, but not as soft as powder blue, and uplifting but not quite as bright as sky blue. Named recently within Pinterest's 2026 palette, a shade that has dominated this year in interiors and is set to continue to do so. I’ve sold so many Mongolian throws in this colour, and I'm also thrilled that many clients are opting to use this colour for their benches and footstools too.
As a once-sceptic about how these cooler shades work when you still want your home to feel warm and inviting, I asked a few interior design clients of mine how they use cool blues in a way that's not going to make a room feel icy.
'Cool blue can feel beautifully classical and elegant; think of pale blue sitting rooms and bedrooms layered with warm textiles and dark wood furniture. Equally, it can feel very contemporary, especially when used in a full colour-drench,' explains one client. But what about concerns with the colour leaning too cold to create cosy spaces? The simple solution here is to pair it with the correct shades, and when you combine this on-trend shade with warmer hues this adds that flash of much-needed warmth.
The colours that go best with cool blue are bright red accents and natural materials such as oak, sisal carpet, and brass detailing. In simple colour theory terms, orange sits opposite blue on the colour wheel, so cool blue is a wonderful way to temper rooms with very warm or orange-tones.
If I’m being honest, in my own home, I’ve never really gravitated towards Cool Blue, but it has such a soothing and gentle quality that I’m looking forward to using it in my next project. I think the overarching benefit is that, being so understated, it doesn’t clamber for attention and it will endure – and when I design a new space, I like it to last for a good few years!
